2018年9月30日下午,在梁林校区1号楼506 学术报告厅,南方科技大学陈忠仁教授来我院作题为《Olefin and Diene Polymers: From Birth to Reincarnation的学术报告。

 

个人简介:陈忠仁博士,南方科技大学讲席教授,毕业于浙江大学化工系,获得美国加州理工学院化工与化学博士学位,师从2005年诺贝尔化学奖得主Grubbs教授和Kornfield教授,在“Science”等以封面主题发表了系列研究。在美国斯坦福大学和普利司通集团等工业界研发工作十多年,完成了高性能弹性体、绿色轮胎材料的合成、加工、应用等关键技术及其产业化,取得了上百亿美元的经济效益。目前在担任南方科技大学化学系讲席教授从事高分子材料研究与化学工程教学,并协助Grubbs教授建设深圳格拉布斯研究院的大分子平台。

 

Lecture Abstract

Olefin polymers such as polyethylene are major commodity polymers due to the highly productive catalysts and readily available monomers. However, there are technical challenges to make polyolefin green and advanced materials, such as the incorporation of functional monomers, the elimination of chain entanglement, and the compatiblization of polyolefin alloys.

Chain entanglement is the unique feature that differentiates polymers from small molecules. The chain entanglement could be so severe, in case for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) when the molecular weight reaches a few millions, that the melt processing becomes impossible. Inspired by the silk-worm that makes perfect cocoon without entangled thread, we have prepared “un-entangled” UHMWPE, revealed the time scale of entanglement formation at melt, and furthermore, demonstrated that a small portion of un-entangled UHMWPE would greatly improve the property and foaming process of commodity polyethylene. Prof. CHEN will also share a few related advances: the synthesis of bimodal polyethylene using in-situ reactive blending using supported catalysts, ADMET polymers for AIE properties, and surprising melting behavior of precision functional polyethylene, and fracture mechanics of soft materials.
